Gershom and Eliezer

Exodus 18.1-8

1 Now Jethro, the priest of Midian and father-in-law of Moses, heard of everything God had done for Moses and for his people Israel, and how the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt.

After Moses had sent away his wife Zipporah, his father-in-law Jethro received her and her two sons. One son was named Gershom, for Moses said, “I have become a foreigner in a foreign land”; and the other was named Eliezer, for he said, “My father’s God was my helper; he saved me from the sword of Pharaoh.”

Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, together with Moses’ sons and wife, came to him in the wilderness, where he was camped near the mountain of God. Jethro had sent word to him, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons.”

So Moses went out to meet his father-in-law and bowed down and kissed him. They greeted each other and then went into the tent. Moses told his father-in-law about everything the Lord had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians for Israel’s sake and about all the hardships they had met along the way and how the Lord had saved them.

The positive side to social media is that it is able to assist us in keeping up with events in people’s lives, hopefully not just a picture of last night’s supper.  Hearing that one is heading home from the hospital.  Another with the sale of a pool in about five minutes from the time of the post.  Seeing the announcements of engagements and births.  We are able to keep up and know some of what is going with people across town or across the world.

Some of those posts are received as information and we might put a “like” of some sort on them.  We might put a short note.  Others will cause us to make a call to have a conversation so we can hear more.  “I heard about…Tell me all about it!”  And we can hear the stories that go with the small announcement.

Jethro has heard of what is going on with Moses and Israel.  He brings Zipporah and the boys to Moses and now Moses tells Jethro all the things God has done, from Egypt to now.  Telling him of the way God has saved them and how God has been faithful.  Moses brings testimony to Jethro about the work of God.

That is the thing that can be so important in our stories with each other.  Sharing these highs and lows of life, and as we do so we share how we have seen God at work in life.  How God has made it possible to go home early from the hospital.  How we have been blessed by the actions of those who have been around us.

God is blessing his people in so many ways as we go through our days.  Some large, some seem small.  But God cares about the large and the small and acts in every place in between.  Think about how we can use the way we speak of the life events about which we post as testimonies of God’s grace.  Using our own little spaces to encourage others in faith.  Showing the blessings of God and helping others to see God at work in our life.  Hoping that they are encouraged to see God at work in their own lives.

Lord, you have given us so many gifts in the past year. We thank you for watching over us and guiding us.  Thank you for your faithfulness and for promising never to leave us.  Now we offer to you what you have given us; use us and our experiences of your grace to help others know about you for Jesus’ sake.  Amen.
