Exodus 23.20-26

20 “See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared. 21 Pay attention to him and listen to what he says. Do not rebel against him; he will not forgive your rebellion, since my Name is in him. 22 If you listen carefully to what he says and do all that I say, I will be an enemy to your enemies and will oppose those who oppose you. 23 My angel will go ahead of you and bring you into the land of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites and Jebusites, and I will wipe them out. 24 Do not bow down before their gods or worship them or follow their practices. You must demolish them and break their sacred stones to pieces. 25 Worship the Lord your God, and his blessing will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness from among you, 26 and none will miscarry or be barren in your land. I will give you a full life span.

The ancient world had a common belief that each region had its own gods.  The fear of going from one region to another had to do with knowing which gods were there.  The people of a place felt that their god could control that area and worshipping that god would make the god or gods favourable to them.  They offered sacrifices to their gods so that they would have crops, rains, children, safety, etc.

As the people have left Egypt they are getting a different view from the rest of the ancient world.  They have seen the God is over any of the gods of Egypt because he defeated the Egyptians for them.  The Egyptian gods could do nothing.  They are told that as they go to the land that God will defeat the people and he is the only God they need.  These other gods are not going to help them.

The view has changed.  One God for all the earth, not one for each region.  One God who is the only God.  This is what they are called to be and do, be the people of God and worship him alone.  They are called to trust him that he will supply them with everything they need.  They will not need other gods for rains, for crops, for children, for anything else they need.

Time has now changed.  It becomes the way of the world that people do not trust God for what they need.  They trust themselves.  They hold on to the things of life and speak of how they worked hard for this and it is theirs to use as they see fit.  Forgetting that it comes from God.  We see struggles in life and think we can wish our way out and work our way out, but do not trust God to supply us with the way out.

Trusting God and honouring him as the only source of all that is good in life.

Song How Great is Our God

Lord Jesus, as we seek to follow you, help us to see how our lives are showing grace in all we do.  Help us to see how we protect those in need, how we comfort those who suffer, how we encourage the fearful.  Bring grace to us and through us.  In the name of Christ, Amen.
