Merry Christmas

Luke 2.8-20

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

I still hear this part of Luke being read by Linus VanPelt.  The telling of the meaning of Christmas to Charlie Brown.  And they don’t start at verse 1 with the census or verse 4 with Joseph and Mary.  Not even the birth, they go right to the shepherds.  One might say it is because they had given Linus the role of shepherd in the play.  But the response of the shepherds brings meaning to our Christmas celebrations.

The shepherds hear the message of the angels.  The announcement of the birth and praise of the choir of angels.  And the shepherds respond by going to see this child who has been born.  They give praise to God for the gift of this child.  The shepherds tell everyone what they had seen.  The angels, the baby.  They rejoice and they proclaim the birth of Jesus.

The meaning of Christmas is that the Saviour is born.  But it means that we don’t sit on the news, we proclaim the news of God’s grace coming.  It means we come to Jesus in worship, but we also come to Jesus in the gospels and we follow.  It means we celebrate a birth, but even more that we celebrate the life he lives and the life he gives.  Each special day of our year points to the same gift of life.  Today we see it begin in Jesus’ birth.  Every day we see it in our lives, and in the lives of others with us as we proclaim God’s grace together.

Prayer

All glory to you, great God, for the gift of your Son, light in darkness and hope of the world, whom you sent to save us.  With singing angels let us praise your name and tell the earth his story, that all may believe, rejoice, and bow down, acknowledging your love through Jesus Christ, our Lord.  Amen.
