Always Grateful

Colossians 3.15-17

15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

What a great set of options for gratitude.  Christ’s peace ruling in our hearts.  Being members of one body.  Teaching, singing, learning.  Speaking and acting.  All of these things in the name of Christ.  Always giving thanks to the Father.  There are no limits to the ways in which we can give thanks.

We can see that it is not specifics of how, it is that it permeates all of our lives.  It is in everything we do.  Giving thanks as we help our neighbour.  Having gratitude as we go about our job.  Thankful as we drive to, from or for work.  Being grateful as we act graciously and lovingly in all we do.

It’s not that we don’t have the pains of life, struggles, frustrations, anger, sadness, etc.  It is just that we see life as bigger than ourselves.  And even if we have a day, week, or month that we live in the valley of life, we come to the other side and return to living in gratitude.  We might not have the smile on our face today, but we know that we will return to living in that gratitude.  We will be able to live lives of thanks to God, even in those days when we feel the darkness of life on us.

Christ does rule in life, and we have thanks that he brings his peace to us for it all, even when it seems that the peace is still sitting on the horizon, or past the sight on the hills.  Grateful always that we are in the hands of our gracious God.

Song 10,000 Reasons

Gracious God, in our highs and lows of life we see you with us always.  Your hands hold us up at all times.  We thank you for keeping with us in all things, even when we fail to stay with you.  We give thanks today for your calling us to be your people, even though we sometimes fail to say it, or act in that gratitude.  Help us to be ever more faithful in our lives of grateful living as your people.  In the grace of Christ that holds us always, Amen.

  1. One of the most beautiful expressions of praise that I have ever seen was a Hawaiian dancer doing the hula to a gospel song. Another was a friend in Florida singing a hymn while signing it for her husband who is deaf.
