Comfort in Belonging

Matthew 10.29-33

29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

32 “Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.

He also watches over me in such a way
that not a hair can fall from my head
without the will of my Father in heaven;

My kids have gotten great joy out of reminding over the years that my hair keeps getting thinner.  I solved that problem and just took it off.  It’s hard to make fun of someone for having no hair when they have willingly taken it off.  But one of the great comforts for those of us losing hair, or having lost it, we know that God has watched every individual hair leave us and it is all okay.

The passage is not about the relative value of birds or the number of hairs we have on our heads.  It is about how God cares for us to our very core.  He cares about the smallest details.  A close parking space to the store for convenience or a farther one when we want exercise.  It matters.  Every part of life is important.

But even more than that, he cares about the most important part of life.  He cares that we belong to him.  Hair might disappear.  Birds will not fly forever.  But we will always belong to God.  We will always be the people of God.  As Jesus reminds us in John 10:

28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.

We will always belong to God and he will ensure that.  We have comfort in knowing that God will hold us in his hands forever.

Prayer

Eternal God, neither death nor life can separate us from your love.  Grant that we may serve you faithfully here on earth, and in heaven rejoice with all your saints, who ceaselessly proclaim your glory; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.  Amen.
