Our Hope is in God

September 19

Psalm 43

Vindicate me, my God,
    and plead my cause
    against an unfaithful nation.
Rescue me from those who are
    deceitful and wicked.
You are God my stronghold.
    Why have you rejected me?
Why must I go about mourning,
    oppressed by the enemy?
Send me your light and your faithful care,
    let them lead me;
let them bring me to your holy mountain,
to the place where you dwell.
Then I will go to the altar of God,
to God, my joy and my delight.
I will praise you with the lyre,
    O God, my God.

Why, my soul, are you downcast?
    Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
    my Saviour and my God.

Many people in the world hold and teach some things that go against what we believe as we follow Jesus.  Not everyone in the church agrees about what it means to follow Jesus in all aspects of life.  We do hold to some basic truths together.  Maybe not in all of the precise details, but in the big picture.  Understanding that regardless of the means by which life began, it was begun by God’s work and at his order.  Understanding that people (all of us) sin and need forgiveness.  Knowing that God is real, he loves the whole of the creation and he offers grace to redeem this creation.

We can go out and argue with people about these, or many other parts of faith.  Or we can follow the way the Psalmist deals with it here.  Bringing the feelings of rejection to God, not lashing out at anyone, whether we feel they deserve it or not.  Bringing our hurt to God and putting our hope in him.  Letting God work to protect his name, not feeling we have to protect him.  God is our stronghold, not us being his last line of defense.  We come to God as the one who defends us and keeps us.

Why are we upset with what others say about us and about God?  Put your trust in God and see him as the Saviour and Protector.  See him as the one in whom we rest and have our being.  For those who disagree with us, allow God to convince them of what they need to know.  And allow God to convince us of where we are wrong.  Let our whole lives bring praise to God our Saviour.  Our God in whom we trust.

Prayer

Lord, our Lord, you are so awesome!  You are beyond what we can imagine possible.  When we take a look at all that you have done and all that you have made, we wonder why you care for people like us.  You have given us an honorable position on this earth of ours — to care for the things you have made, to preserve them and maintain them.  You have entrusted living things to us!  Lord, our Lord, the whole earth recognizes how awesome you are!  Amen.
