Meditate on These Things


October 25

Philippians 4.8-9

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable — if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me — put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

Sometimes we get these things stuck in our heads.  It could be the catchy little tune from an advertisement.  It just won’t go away.  It becomes like the closing song of the old kid’s show – “This Is the Song that Doesn’t End”.  It drones on and on in our heads. 

It can often be the thoughts that take us in the wrong direction.  Concerning ourselves with the perceived wrongs of others.  Fretting over the worries of finance, or other things outside of our control.  Having those thoughts that take us to the worst in ourselves or others.

Paul reminds us to think of the things that are from God.  Think about the actions of God we see in the world around us today.  Dwell on the good we have seen in others.  Keep a few verses on the fridge, the dash of the car, or wherever we see them.  Seeing that God is with us and keeps us always.

In those times when we feel the harshness of life we can place the words of the laments before us.  Maybe looking at Psalm 13, looking for God’s presence and comfort.  Knowing that he is there, and always will be.  And as we struggle, we take comfort in knowing that God has not let go of us.

May we have the presence of God be the thing that sticks in our minds today, and always.  Knowing that with him we have been forgiven, we are always loved and we will always belong.

Our Lord and King, in Christ you have revealed your glory among the nations.  Preserve the works of your mercy, that your church throughout the world may persevere with steadfast faith in the confession of your name.  The name in which we offer our prayers, Jesus, our Lord and Saviour, Amen.
