Colossians 3.15-17

15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace.  And be thankful.  16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.  17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

One of the memories I have attached to this text is that one of my colleagues was talking about dealing with a few people who were adamant that the only songs we should sing in church were the Psalms.  While also reflecting on the beginning of Psalm 98 – Sing to the Lord a new song – he remembered that this text from Paul does not say to use psalms, psalms and psalms.  Paul includes hymns and songs from the Spirit (Spiritual songs in other versions).

More importantly, how do we utilize music as part of life beyond worship on Sunday mornings?  I hear music playing in so many places.  Stores, restaurants, elevators.  I hear it often in the car as I drive and in the home, especially when Connie is reading or cleaning.  Music sets a tone.

For reference, one piece of music I go to when I am sad is Beethoven’s 7th symphony, the 2nd movement.  I’ve linked it here so you have the opportunity to hear it.  When I am driving I often listen to music from the 70’s.  When I am studying I have various lists that might be used, Mozart or Chopin, sets of worship music that is more contemporary.  All to remind us that music can move us.

I’m not sure if Paul understood all the psychology of music, but he understood its importance.  Gathering with others and singing has brought joy and comfort to so many of us over the years.  Being able to share in music has been a wonderful part of celebrating.  Whether alone, or in a group, take time to enjoy the gift of music to build faith and to bring joy and comfort into life.

Prayer

God of comfort, be with the lonely, with those who by neglect or willful separation are left alone.  Fill empty spaces with present love, and long times of solitude with lively thoughts of you.  Encourage us to visit lonely women and men, so they may be cheered by the Spirit of Jesus Christ, who walked among as a friend, and is our Lord forever.  Amen.
