Happy New Year

January 1

Psalm 8

Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory
    in the heavens.
Through the praise of children and infants
you have established a stronghold against your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.
When I consider your heavens,
    the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?

You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honor.
You made them rulers over the works of your hands;
you put everything under their feet:
all flocks and herds,
and the animals of the wild,
the birds in the sky,
and the fish in the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas.

Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

A new calendar begins.  At least in the western world.  Other calendars have different times of the year to change from year to year.  The importance of whose year is quite overrated.  Regardless of the calendar, the time, the places, the events, the earth and all that is in it is meant to bring praise to God.

Whether we make it a resolution for the year, or just for the time today, we look to see the ways in which we see God working in our world.  It is easy to see so many places where there are wars, famines, disasters of every sort.  But it should be just as easy to see the ways in which God is at work around us.

Start by listing a few.  If you start to get concerned about the day, the week, or any of life, find a few things that day that show God working.  Keep a focus on what God is doing in our midst now.  It puts a better view on our lives as we see that we are following a God who continues to act in his world.

Prayer

God of new beginnings, you wipe away our tears and call us to care for one another.  Give us eyes to see your gifts, hearts to embrace all creation, and hands to serve you every day of our lives.  We ask this in the name of Jesus.  Amen.
