Loved Enough, And A Bit More

January 5

Psalm 36.5-9

Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens,
    your faithfulness to the skies.
Your righteousness is like the highest mountains,
    your justice like the great deep.
    You, Lord, preserve both people and animals.
How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!
    People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
They feast on the abundance of your house;
    you give them drink from your river of delights.
For with you is the fountain of life;
    in your light we see light.

Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell wrote a song in the late 60’s about the depth of love for another person.  (Some might think that was written by Sister Mary Clarence to be sung for the Pope*)  You might remember the chorus of that song.

‘Cause, baby, there ain’t no mountain high enough
Ain’t no valley low enough
Ain’t no river wide enough
To keep me from getting to you, babe

For as deep as that may be, that is a love that still pales in comparison to the love of God for his people.  It doesn’t just reach across mountains, oceans, valley and rivers.  It reaches across all of space and all of time.  The song has a love that can only last as long as each one’s life span.  God’s love takes us into eternity.

As we come near the end of this first week of the year, we come in the knowledge that it will continue in the gracious, unending love of God.  We take refuge in his love.  Knowing that he will protect us, he will guide us, he will feed us.  All that we need will be found in his hands.  Trust in the unfailing love of God today and throughout the year, to the end of all time.

SongGood, Good Father

Prayer

We praise you, God almighty, for the power you have shown in creating the world.  We thank you for your love in redeeming us from sin and in creating us anew in Christ.  Grant us strength in this life to honor you, Lord God, both in worship and in witness, for Jesus Christ’s sake.  Amen.
